The FDA has cleared the first online vision test.

Visibly, the developer of an at-home digital vision testing platform, announced that it has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its Visibly Digital Acuity Product.

How does this work?

Using a combination of a mobile device and a computer, the online test takes about 6 minutes. The results are then reviewed by an eye care provider who decides the next steps (either release the prescription or request an in-person evaluation). Watch the demo here.

Who is this test for?

The test is designed to be used by adults between 22 and 40 years of age.

Does this work for contact lenses, too?

Yes, according to the company’s website, you can renew your glasses or contact lens prescription from the comfort of your home in about 6 minutes.

Are they trying to get rid of eye doctors?

Visibly says no, it actually wants to work with eye care providers. (via)
